Domestic Adoptions
The CAS domestic program is a directly related to the agency’s pregnancy counseling program. Women with unplanned pregnancies throughout North Carolina are availed free pregnancy counseling. Should neither these new mothers nor members of their extended families be in a position to rear their children as they so desire, they can consider the option of adoption.
Whereas children coming into CAS custody are being voluntarily relinquished for adoption, the birth moms and dads have the option of being as directly involved in the selection of the parents of their babies. At the same time, adoptive parents need to explore their comfort level and acceptance not only of such issues as the child’s gender, race and health, but also the matter of legal risk placements and open adoption.
CAS offers biannual pre-adoption training workshop to discuss the various issues and topics that set aside many adoptive placements today from those just a few decades ago. Adoptive parents submit to CAS a personalized letter to birth mothers in which they briefly describe their family as well as the strength and love that they bring into adoption. Their thoughts and feelings are further revealed through a photo album that they develop.
Although CAS strives to place all children in its custody in North Carolina, non-resident families are accepted if the agency does not readily have a family for a child. CAS believes the stop-over in a licensed, transitional foster care should be as brief as possible.
